Hooters, the well-known franchise restaurant is being sued in Queens for race discrimination by a Korean-American customer.
Last July, Kisuk Cha and his girlfriend, both Korean immigrants, walked into a Hooters in Fresh Meadows, Queens, and ordered food to go. According to the New York Times Cityroom blog, after they placed their order, they noticed their server and another employee standing at the computer giggling and “gawking at them.”
Mr. Cha then took a look at his receipt and he, and his girlfriend noticed that in the space reserved for the customer’s name, the cashier had typed “chinx.” Mr. Cha says he and his girlfriend say they were very shocked. Mr. Cha was so distraught that he lost his appetite and threw the food away when he got home.
He then decided to file a lawsuit in federal court in Brooklyn. His lawyer elaborated that his incident caused him mental anguish and that he is haunted by the ridiculing giggles and stares of his persecutor.
The lawsuit is aimed at the chain’s parent company, Hooters of America, as well as the owners of the Hooters franchise in Fresh Meadows. Two named individuals were also added as Defendants by Mr. Cha, including the person whose name was printed on the receipt “220 Shenika.”
The company that owns this franchised restaurant as well as three other restaurants on Long Island said that when they were advised of the incident by Mr. Cha’s lawyer, they immediately started an internal investigation. A 17-year old hostess stepped forward, admitted committing the act, and then resigned.
